Grannies a Go Go
Grannies a Gogo: the Vernon - South Africa Connection is a volunteer group, a 'sister' project with grandmothers in Sabie, South Africa.
'Gogo' is the Zulu word for grandmother, so our name means grandmother to grandmother. Our group was founded three years ago when Susan Fenner, returning from four years in Sabie, saw a way to meet some of the needs of poor grandmothers in Sabie who struggle to raise grandchildren, orphaned mostly due to the AIDS pandemic. Dealing with grief, financial hardship and the challenge of raising young children, these grandmothers have responded so positively to the financial aid we have given. They've grown gardens and marketed produce, undertaken sewing projects and taken part in sports. The group they've formed is called Sitabogogo - "help a grandmother" and it has brought them out of isolation into the joy of being with others, participating and learning. All the funds we raise go to improve their lives and the lives of their grandchildren.
